The CO2 ones made for airsoft aren't so bad, but can still be dangerous. If you're gonna use them, it would be best if you get everyone's permission before playing with them so you know everybody is okay with it. I know the only kind I've seen before was 120 decibels, which is alot, but for just one intant bang, it shouldn't cause any permenant hearing damage unless it goes off really close to a person's head.

Sound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That link has a list of various sounds and their average decibel rating. Right at 170-180 decibels is a stun grenade/flashbang

Either way it will cause significant damage to the "hair cells" in your ear and brain. Hair cells are the 150 or so cells you have in your ear that converts sound to electronic frequencies. Damage to these cells is what causes degenerative hearing problems.

bad idea because the human instinct is when someone comes at you with a gun you unleash everything you've got so a flashbangs in your hand the guys a couple yards away what do you do? throw it at him as accuratly as you can to his body or anywhere near to him (head, feet , etc and it detonates so close to him it can make some serious problems for both the eyes and ears so i say flashbang are a no idea and i wont start on smoke grenades for my already very long post =P.

Take a sparkler and shave off the powder on the stick. do that to about 5 or 6 of them, and make a few small black powder bombs. Put the sparkler powder into a small container and wrap it loosely. Stick one small fuse into the black powder bomb and another equal length fuse into the sparkler bomb. Tape the two fuses together after placing a larger single fuse touching both smaller fuses. Tape both bomb parts together and you got yourself a homemade flashbang.

Take a small black powder bomb and stick a fuse in it. get a plastic bag that you might get at walmart or such, and cut out a hexagon about 5-6" in diameter. Place charge in center of bag piece and form the bag around the charge leaving about half an inch on all sides. tape bag as is to hold form. pour in .12bbs and tape the top together.

I am not liable for any malfunctions or injuries caused by misuse or idiocy. If you arent sure of what you are doing, you shouldnt be playing with pyrotechnics anyway.

But those are two of my homemades...I have a few homemade claymores, but I havent been able to make a charge small enough to not completely obliterate anyone within 5 feet of the direct blast.

I used a large blank ammo using training grenade in a CQB scenario ONCE. (I cannot stress the ONCE enough)

We were all in swat outfits staggered outside the door. Guy infront of me opened the door, I tossed it over his shoulder and we stormed in behind it, we really should have waited for the BANG first as despite it bouncing off the wall into a seperate room off the corridoor we were entering I had ringing ears for about an hour and the guy in the 8x8 room it landed in was seriously lost. He could hear okay after but he was all dizzy and disorientated & so stunned he didn't even notice taking hits. I guess it worked.

But not something I would want to use in airsoft again.

I only use them in outdoor scenarios in areas that I know will not catch fire. Im very safe with them and I have tested them on myself. Every time I make a batch, I'll stand pretty much over it, and it'll feel like getting lit up at 5 feet in a cqb place, but my ears are fine after a minute and the pain doesnt last.

One of the teams I am on is thinking about adopting the design to use during field games.
