You use grease on your gearbox because it's made to take higher temperatures, stress, and lots of moving parts where as lube is lighter and made for more "simplistic" things.
Now you can use lube in your gearbox but you'll be pretty much constantly lubing the thing up because as I said lube is lighter and wears away much quicker than heavy grease.
So in short, it's not advised. Everything has a purpose.
You can use auto grease on your gearbox BUT you ONLY want to use 90% or higher silicon oil on pretty much everything else.

can silicone grease be used inside the gearbox? i've heard it's not suited for metal to metal lubrication :/
also, can the silicone grease be used in GBB's?

It is highly advised to use grease in the gearbox as opposed to oil lube
Silicone grease CAN be used in GBB, but not on rubber parts/non-metal.
100% silicone oil is preferable for GBBs

yeah.. I've never heard of an all-purpose grease either yet.
BTW, if you need a few pointers on what silicone oil lube to get for your GBB, seriously check out my guide in my sig. I have a whole section on it in the Basic Maintenance area. Just some basic do's/don'ts

I use 10 weight/15 weight silicone shock oil. 100 is pretty heavy but if you don't see any negative side effects, it should be fine. I just put a few drops on the moving parts of the gun.

Best used sparingly. Should be 100% silicone and not WD-40
