Firstly: AIRSOFT SNIPING IS NOT LIKE IN VIDEO GAMES BEING A "leet" LONE WOLF PWNING NOOBS FROM MILES AWAY!!!
airsoft sniping requires tedious ammounts of patients and being tasks with recon missions etc sometimes never requiring you fire a shot in an entire day.
Although if you are interested buy a cheapsoft rifle like the JG Bar 10 and give it a shot but MOST IMPORTANTLY is being stealthy. Practice with a $20 springer pistol and your stealth skills will improve (no im not taking the piss) and if you still want to snipe go ahead.
soz if that really doesnt answer your questiong its just something many new players dont consider.

Robin-Hood is right, the responsibilities of a sniper differ a lot from video games and real life for that matter. i would say stealth takes a slight precedence over rifle skills although serious airsoft snipers may disagree... sure go ahead and really work on your marksman skills but don't neglect the stealth aspect.
snipers are excellent in games like capture the flag, a good ghillie suit can make you invisible, and therefore indispensable for defending your base for example. with good radio coms between you and your assault team you could single handedly defend you base against overwhelming odds, if they can't pin point your location you can hold them off long enough for a couple from your assault team to fall back, then you can hit them from both sides.
there is a sniper from the UK that has turned stealth into an art, he is very serious about what he does and his attention to detail is awe inspiring, if you are serious about becoming a sniper, i urge you to go to this guy's website and see what you may end up competing against if your that lucky...
it's a very professional site with great photos and even better advice. here's the link: airsoft sniper (i just checked this link and it seems the site is offline, i'm not sure why but i'll leave the link i case it comes back on...)
here are some good video clips serious airsoft snipers if you're interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETIOu5FaBmk (marine corp snipers, excellent)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPIxf4ZeMmU (this is a Marine sniper playing paintball a very good example of ghillie suit in use, although it does look very "staged")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWime...eature=related (this is the first part in a series of 7 that covers pretty much all responsibilities if an airsoft sniper, i haven't watched them all but they're not bad.)

I don't have anything against snipers however I would never take a sniper in my team roster, talk about a useless spot.
Wow 3 kills for the whole day Dave(Sniper), I got me a score of 21 Jon(Forward)
I'm sorry guys, the fact is most snipers are looked apon as noobs.
My two cents.

lolololololz i agree actually. The problem is that when it comes down to "range" the thing is that BB's don't exactly behave like bullets... they do tend to swerve. I have a friend who thinks sniping is all BA... 30 shots=one kill... (thats almost two mags) his accuracy may be off but the target was... ahem... 30 feet away

Tried getting into the sniper role once,,,hated it,,,10:30am to 5:30pm,,,i shot three round's and missed with all three,,,,,i hav a Steyr SSG,,,its been used once,,,,,i just cant see the point of a airsoft sniper rifle shooting any thing less than 500-550fps,,,,,,in Ireland, even your airsoft sniper rifle is held to a 328fps limit,,,,my dmr has a better hop system and the same length barrel as my SSG,,,and i can use a 5 round burst to greatly improve the odd's of hitting my target,,,,ok its not as quite as my SSG,,,but with the dmr at least i can join in the airsoft game and not hav to sit in a ditch for a day waiting for somebody to come to me.

like robin said the sniper in airsoft is more of a scout for intel than a actuall sniper
but i do have a m324 and have hit people from a decent range wit one shot but i use that rifle all the time and can guess almost exactly were the bb will go regardless of wind or elevation

The biggest thing an AS sniper is going to do is collect intel and do recon work. Snipers are not glory hounds with dozens of kills per game to their name.
Granted, I have taken many players out at insane ranges, far greater than they can do with their AEG, but it is not often. And a solo sniper is a death sentence. Snipers must always work with a team to be effective.
Most people think they can be an effective and efficient AS sniper with a stock spring or gas rifle, that shoots the same velocity as a typical AEG... not going to happen unless you are really lucky.
An AS sniper not only has a good quality rifle, that can shoot 500-550 fps (in USA), but they spend countless hours in practice and training. Not to mention the money they spend on equipment that may only see use on the field rarely at best.
I recommend that anyone who is interested in becoming an AS sniper, think long and hard about it... it isn't an every game thing and common gear isn't going to cut it. Contrary to what some people may say, AS sniper is not a noob thing.. it takes a great deal of training and experience to do is successfully. Those that don't see the value of an AS sniper must certainly not have experienced playing with a real AS sniper.
