How to: AUG


Intro
Many people have bought airsoft AUG's because they think it's a really cool looking gun and really like the bullpup concept. I'm one of them, I especially like the A2, IMO it's a really sleek and futuristic looking gun. What I and many others don't like about AUG's are their technical flaws, in this article I'll describe my methods on how to fix or work around several of the flaws. I have owned 3 AUG's, I have upgraded them, given up on them and then tried again, so I have gained extensive experience with the AUG platform.

No semi-auto
This commonly occurs when the contacts come to far apart in the semi-auto switch in the gearbox. (The semi-auto switch is the internal, regular switch in the gearbox.) This is usually caused by wear and is relatively easy to fix. You simply have to bend these contacts closer together so that the contact piece on the trigger trolley makes the connection earlier again. It's also possible to drill out the pin that holds the contact piece, pull it out and then glue it back in again so that it sticks 1-2mm further out. If the issue is caused by damage to the contacts and/or contact piece because of arcing or wear you have to replace the trigger switch. I recommend getting a switch with a long contact piece if you have to replace it. If semi-auto engages after the "click" in the main trigger, you can compensate for this by gluing thin plates of steel or aluminum onto the gearbox trigger. I recommend using very thin plates, .2mm at most so that you can "shim" it more precisely. Be careful not to "shim" the trigger too much or the semi-auto switch may become unable to reset properly.

Gearbox support
There are several ways to stabilize the gearbox better. A well known mod is the "bolt mod", where you have a guide on how to do this mod, courtesy of ThompsonFTW: http://www.airsoftsociety.com/forums/f10/aug-bolt-mod-34572/ This mod requires some precision, but it tightens down the gearbox very well. If you are willing to remove the fake bolt assembly, you can do a much simpler mod. It's not as robust as the common "bolt mod", but it's much easier to do and will make the gearbox significantly more stable. You simply drill a 2.5mm hole through the top of the body, right behind the "shell ejection port" and screw in a 3x10mm screw. There's no need to tap the hole, the screw itself will create the threads in the plastic.

This is a lesser known issue as AUG's aren't often used as base guns for high ROF builds. The reason this happens is because the motor cage doesn't sit at a straight angle relative to the "motor hole" in the gearbox, and places the pinion gear dangerously close to the anti-reversal latch. When using a high RPM motor or running a high voltage battery the anti-reversal latch may swing out far enough to contact the pinion gear. I don't need to explain why this is a bad thing. The way to fix this is to either use a significantly stronger spring on the latch, or you can shorten it by about 2mm. As long as you don't shorten it so much that the spring slips off it should function normally and this will create enough clearance between the latch and pinion gear.

Mag well plate
This is the angled plastic plate that sits on top of the magwell. It contains the feeding tube for the magwell and it also supports and aligns the front of the gearbox. This plate is mounted on rails inside the body, sometimes it can pop out of one of these rails. If you ever have a feeding issue with your AUG, this is the first thing to check, it's easier to check if you take the gearbox out of the gun. This doesn't happen often and isn't a major flaw, but it's good to be aware of this, as it's a common cause for feeding issues with AUG's.

Wobbly front section
An easy way to tighten down the vertical wobble in the front/top section is to put on or more strips of tape on the top and bottom of the "ears" on the inner end where it meets the gearbox. This will fill the gap between the "ears" and the support bars inside the body. To tighten up the horizontal play/wobble you can put strips of tape inside the hole that sits on the plastic "nub" on the front of the plastic receiver. This will fill in any gap here and tighten it up further. These mods may seem a bit crude, but the simplest solutions are often the best as they say.

Seating the hop-up chamber
If the hop-up chamber isn't pushed far enough into the front of the gearbox you can elongate the two small holes on the front of the hop-up chamber by 1-2mm. This is where those two little screws at the inner end of the outer barrel screws in and lock the hop-up chamber in place. By elongating these holes you allow the hop-up chamber to go slightly further back and sit more snugly in the front of the gearbox. Be careful not to remove too much material, you don't want these mounting holes to break and you also don't want the chamber to go too far back and pop out of the plastic "guide-cap" that it sits in. The purpose of this "guide-cap" is to prevent the hop-up chamber and inner barrel from rotating inside the outer barrel. I found this mod necessary on my CA AUG, but not on my JG AUG, so it varies between brands.

Summary
Some people have probably figured out other ways of improving their AUG's, these are the ways I have found through trial and error, to improve my AUG's. This article should help people improve their AUG's and also hopefully help the platform gain more popularity. Maybe the platform will gain more favor with the manufacturers in the future and we will see more AUG's on the market.
