How do I make an AEG hurt less? Would changing the weight of the BBs help, or do I have to change the spring?

A weaker spring. Heavier BBs can sometimes help, but I find that they just "punch" rather than sting.

The best way is to simply wear better protection. If the clothing is tight to your body it will hurt more as well--a loose or baggy shirt will absorb the impact.
Hurt you or the target you are shooting at?

The target, mostly, although I might be the target in some cases.
Shoot lighter bbs...by the time it hits 50 feet...they will have lost a lot of impact energy.

Wear "hard" clothes, in the old day it would be clothes with too much starch...turns the fabric into panel like material that deflect shots and mitigates impact forces too.

You can find some new "crisp" fatigues that are like this until you wear and wash them a few times.

Okay. Most of my engagements will likely be above 50 feet.
You can still use .20g...but .25g would be better.

The sting comes from shots under 30 feet
