Would there be any interest in an AS discord server? Just for general little chats, forum would still be the main hub.

I really dislike Discord from a personal standpoint, but I can't ignore how popular it is. Nor can I ignore how internet forums have been declining in popularity for years now. If Discord helps grow the community and the sport in general, then that's great.

I feel like, unfortunately, it's a smart move to make one for AS as a community. However, for AS as a forum... I can't help but to feel like moving to Discord is one of the last nails in the coffin for a lot of online discussion spaces.

Trust me, I totally get it. Honestly if there was a way to set up like a sidebar chat on here so people could just have a general chat instead of having to make a thread I would do that in a heartbeat.
I am on a regional Discord group for Airsoft in MN.

It has it's pros and cons.
+1 on liking the idea but not liking Discord: app is too sticky fingered when it comes to user data, to flippant on privacy imo. Also has had some weird incidents lately such as altering the VRAM clock speed on nvidia GPU's without explanation. Owned by a Chinese company, for what it's worth. Then again, so is Vertical Scope...

Telegram would be better from a privacy standpoint, has a web and mobile app same as Discord, but it's primarily a text communication app.
Are you sure about that? Since Aug of last year....

And Torstar is a division of another Canadian Company Nord Star.

Ahhh...

I would say they are a minority stake holder for there are other stake holders with controlling shares, Sony being one of them and a multitude of VC firms. Thus they are not a true Chinese company.

Interesting thing is I could find any mention of Tencent being a Majority Share Holder.

Also interesting to see that other "articles" are "written" in the same manner/syntax under other heading with near identical verbage.

This article alludes to it still being "privately" held.

Article I linked states majority as of 2022.

Don't have a link handy for VS but I recall reading posts about a financial connection when they took over a couple different forums I used to frequent.

Edit: Can't keep up with the edits lol
Yeah...I am very concerned if Tencent owns a "controlling" stake in Discord...but fortunately...I don't think they have "full control".
Anything and everything eventually gets discussed here on this forum…

Linking specific "old" comments from old threads is harder in Discord.
One thing to note, we started a AS discord in I want to say 2016, when we used to do the weekly Google Hangouts calls. While it was full of activity, years of good work kinda got buried and its not indexable at all. Additionally, it sucked away a really good group of guys because why make forum posts when you could just use discord. My two cents anyways...

Yeah this is really what I'm getting at. I couldn't care less about privacy or whatnot on Discord when I'm censoring my photos and it's a fake account for airsoft anyway.

I just don't think it's a convenient platform for a lot of the content that gets posted on here, and I'm definitely worried about the potential drain on active forum usership.

Thought I’d throw in my two bits. I may be crazy, but I feel like the folks who would get sucked away from this forum will already get sucked away by FB groups. Most of the folks on here seem to be one of three kinds: longtime residents who have been into airsoft forever, younger college age folk who have been into it for a few years, and then the guy who show up three times a year to see something.

This forum is a lot less active than it used to be, because other groups already pulled folks off. Now, what you really have left is the longtime folks, and the younger guys who enjoy forums specifically.

I really think the huge advantage of having a Discord wouldn’t be to have amazing philosophical airsoft conversations that should be recorded for all time, but to discuss and work through common issues/help newer players. Almost every answer can be found if you search bar hard enough, but it’s really difficult on this forum since our search bar sucks. A discord would allow us to simply have a five minute discussion with a new player and be done with it.

Well said, Leo. I will say that the google search bar is preferable over the airsoftsociety SB as long as you put "airsoft society" directly after the topic. I feel like people just googling topics/problems do/would benefit from the forum's internet presence more than they would from a discord server. How would information be archived/retrieved in a discord setting?

This is less about archiving information and more a casual space for members to hang out and just chat, without flooding the off topic forums here.
Oh right, ~whoops should've read the top.
Has anyone made a server? I would be glad to make one,
