What is the sign of a gear box tearing up?

a crack around the front end. are you referring to the gears or the case? high pitch means bevel/pinion is too loose. low tone grinding means bevel/pinion too tight. slow rate of fire with wiring and motor heating up means gears are rubbing on each other.

Well if the gears are stripped then it will be screeching at you and won't fire. What sounds is your gearbox making?

    Edit: sniped by Alex

Not good. I'd open it back up, it could be a variety of things. And once you do open it up, please take pictures so we could diagnose the problem, per se.

Stripped gears- maybe burned motor. Collateral damage
