Issue with a Recent Transaction, Need Advice for an Appropriate Response

I recently sold an expensive airsoft gun on eBay that the buyer is apparently having an issue with. They are claiming that the aftermarket muzzle brake that was attached to the barrel "was off and loosend during shipping" and the threads are damaged beyond repair. For backstory, I had previously purchased the gun with the muzzle brake already installed and I never attempted to remove it while owning it. I've sold well over 500 airsoft guns on eBay so I know how to package things, and the buyer even told me that the box arrived in excellent condition, so I think that rules out anything being dropped down 3 flights of stairs lmao. The part that confuses me the most is that there was a punch pin in place to hold the muzzle brake to the outer barrel and there appears to be almost plier-like indentation around the end of the muzzle brake, indicating that this person was attempting to remove it and is now passing it off as having loosened during shipping. The buyer has not mentioned anything of a return/refund, so I'm not sure what to make of the situation, but they are asking me for some type of resolve. My biggest concern is that shipping this item was almost $40 and eBay may force me to pay return shipping in this case. Does anyone have some advice? I'm willing to fight this because I know damn well that the muzzle brake was secured in place. Since he sent me pictures of the muzzle brake not attached to the gun, is there any way that this could be seen as disassembly - voiding eBay guidelines for potential product returns? Or is it best for me to just save myself the headache ask for the buyer to return the item?

My other thought is maybe the buyer doesn't know that airsoft barrels are -14mm, and possibly tried to screw in the opposite direction causing the threads to strip?

Note: This is a buyer with a rating of over 1500 and he had been asking me questions specifically about the muzzle brake a week before purchasing the gun.

Get a picture fo him that shows what is left of the retention system that was on the brake. Then say...you took it off wrong and this is why...that will be your basis for fighting his "error" on eBay.
Have you sent the buyer any other photos of the muzzle end of the AEG? It's not clear from the listing as all of the photos are taken from the rear. If the buyer opens a case you can argue your point but unless you have clear timestamped photos showing the brake and how it was pinned from before the sale to compare it's likely Ebay will side with the buyer since that's what Ebay does. Dealing with bad sales/theft is a part of doing business, eating the $40 return shipping is going to be a lot better than eating the $339.99.

I would tell him if he believes the brake loosened in transit despite being pinned in place and apparently mangled with hand tools inside of a box with no damage, then to open a case. If you have clear photos taken from before the shipment I'd say you definitely have the advantage in terms of evidence.

Unfortunately I don’t have close up images of the muzzle brake, so it looks like the best course of action would be to do as you said and just accept a return. The buyer stated that they won’t be in town until Monday and that they will send me a video “explaining what happened.” Maybe they’ll drop the conversation by then, I’ll just have to wait and see. Thanks for the advice.
I've dealt with this while selling folding knives (expensive ones) on eBay. The buyer complained about an aspect of the model and demanded settlement. I told him he should've researched the model before buying it. The buyer was able to force a return by claiming the item was not as described, which is basically a cheat code in eBay terms as far as I'm aware. I got to issue a refund, eat shipping, and then deal with the item that the buyer had clearly disassembled, messed with, and broken.

If I were you, I would fight to find a way to avoid the return, but you have to decide if you want to deal with the inevitable negative feedback that will result, and the headache.

This is why I avoid selling on eBay...

I hate selling on ebay. They took 13 % off my last sale, including from my shipping money. Just ridiculous. I lost 45 dollars on what was supposed to be a 270 dollar sale.
What’s worse is that now the selling fee applies to the entire total including the shipping and sales tax price, not just the item price. I suppose it was implemented to circumvent some other issues they were having though.
That is why one can only sell high margin items or just don't care what you get for an item...on ebay.

I would see items with $250 shipping charges. Now I know why.

For some items the eBay fees are even higher. I believe for the knives I used to sell, it was more like 30%.

Gotta have some mighty high margins to get anywhere.
