I ordered a mystery boneyard box from AirsoftGI to learn to tech and work on a project gun. I got some sort of AK but I cant identify what brand it is.

Basically I want to upgrade this the best I can internally and externally.

Your best bet might be yanking the gearbox out and look for markings.

Cyma will usually have cm*** something on it, jg will have jg or ge on it

I just took the motor out, it looks like it is indeed a cyma. Model is CM02B

    This is a CM028B: https://www.evike.com/products/30161/
    Yours appears to be a CM028A: https://www.evike.com/products/27880/

I'm assuming the stock motor has ferrite magnets, and that there are screws in and/or around the magwell?

And...did you take off the dust cover and handguard? Or did it come missing those..

Incidentally, this is one of the best platforms to learn how to tech on. Easy to shim, tons of info online, a bizarre amount of upgrade possibilities, and pretty durable stock internals.

The Handgaurd and dust cover are both missing. I want to get wood furniture for the handgaurd, grip, and stock. I’ve already found some dust covers for it for a decent price. It did come with the bolt that allows you to adjust the hop up. Another thing that seems to be missing are the screws that hold together the front and body. Not sure where to get screws for that.

As far as the motor goes I will have to take a look. But my goal for this rifle is to get some good range on it and trigger response. Anything really to make it a solid performer.

This. Just find the correctly threaded screws, cut/file to length, and voila. Plus about the missing externals is that you can customize the body to your taste, with minimal waste of parts. Since the front and body are held together by screws, that means this is a TM-style AK[important to know for external upgrades, and also means that the stock motor is likely ferrite].

What would you recommend to start upgrading first?

-16-22tpa motor. An SHS High Torque will improve the stock performance drastically.
    -After that, bucking and nub.
-If your stock barrel is brass, clean it out with rubbing alcohol. If it's aluminium, replace it with a brass or steel one.
-Standard hopup unit doesn't need upgraded.
-Oh, and if you know how to solder, definitely upgrade the wiring to 16awg[or install a mosfet, if you're feeling ambitious].
-After that, clean all the factory grease out of the gearbox, reshim the gears, fix any compression leaks [they will be there, trust me], relube the gearbox with SuperLube, reassemble, and test it out in a game to see what else you'd like to do.
The technical term is bucking. Packing was an old term, which I think had a lot to do with an incomplete comprehension of English... but idk. Frankly, I think the use of the term 'packing' simply confuses newbs.

Awesome, I have also been considering a black polymer handguard (no rails) since I already have a polymer grip and stock, but so far the only one I have found is LCT and i'm not sure if it would fit.

IMO, this should be a gun that you learn teching on. Don't buy expensive upgrades for it. Especially don't buy expensive external upgrades like that wood kit for it. Save the expensive stuff for when you become an experienced tech. The CYMA cm028 is a good gun, but not really ideal for upgrading since the externals are weak. Save the serious upgrades for when you get a CM 040, 045, 048 or LCT Ak.

The wood kit was like $12... but other than that I completely agree.
