R/AirsoftClones on Reddit

Hey everyone, I hope it’s okay that I post this here, me and a few friends who love building airsoft clones of military and law enforcement weapons from around the world have started a new sub Reddit for like minded airsoft nerds to hangout, discuss clone building and show off our builds!

You might ask, “what is airsoft clone building?” Well, it’s somewhat of a niche hobby that has its routes in the real steel clone building world. Where guys build near identical copies of military and law enforcement guns like the ever popular MK18 and Block II as well as other military and LEO builds like the MK12 Mod 1 and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team rifle. Now, In the real steel clone world, they are pretty strict, most builders are accurate down to the smallest parts like having the correct Bolt Carrier, sling mounts, sights, barrels, etc etc etc. This hobby in the real steel world has taken off over the last few years and as such it has also gained popularity in the Airsoft community.

Now, the kind of accuracy the real steel guys aim for is obviously not exactly possible with airsoft. We don’t have access to things like keyhole marked Colt upper receivers or Colt marked 10.3” barrels. Maybe the PTW guys have HAO parts that get close, but, for regular AEG’s or GBBR’s we are limited to getting as close as we can with what’s available.

so, when it comes to airsoft clones, all we ask is that you’re at least showing an obvious effort towards cloning your rifle to look like it’s real military/LE counterpart. That means a tan combat machine with a black quad rail is NOT a MK18 Mod 1. You are least would want to have a black receiver set with a Daniel Defense mk18 rail and some of the correct accessories (airsoft replicas are of course the norm as a real eotech or PEQ-15 is going to be prohibitively expensive for most airsoft builders)

So, if that sounds like something you’d like to check out or possibly come post and join. We would love to have you!

The subreddit is called R/AirsoftClones so just come over to Reddit and search for us!

Thanks for reading and to the mods of this forum, thank you for allowing this post! I really hope I’m not stepping onanyones toes here as that’s not my intention!

What you describe has been in Airsoft for over 18 years. It isn't new here on the forum. I know of several forums that went down with a lot of "clone" guns, but we didn't call them "Clone" guns back then.

There are some people that doing it very well.

Like this guy July_Pi:

A sample of his renditions

He mainly frequents the forums and not Reddit.

Cool, thanks for your input. I do realize that many people have been doing this for many years, when I got into airsoft in 2010 or so I would see posts of "clone" guns. However, as you mentioned, no one called them "clones". So, while the concept is obviously not new, it has certainly gained a lot of traction in recent years! Which is why we thought a little place for us nerds to hangout on Reddit would be fun. As I said, not trying to step on anyones toes! I hope you'll come check us out! Thanks also for sharing July_PI's info and posts, he has some amazing builds!

Not a fan of redit at all but from a Block I/II AEG casual clone (doppelganger? changeling?) owner best of luck for your sub's growth. Post photos in here too to bump the thread and thus potential exposure in the future.

Perhaps this should be moved to the Images/Video subforum?

Reddit is good for some things—getting quick, quasi-curated answers to specific questions. Though not my preferred platform, I've found it useful at times.

Forums of course offer more in-depth content, often from those with a lot of highly specific knowledge. I tell my non-forum friends, that forums are the quickest way to learn about a new hobby or interest. You benefit from some of the best minds in the field, and often receive wicked-fast replies from an array of well-informed contributors (two of whom have just replied here).

Good luck with your Reddit—I'll check it out!
