RPK. It will last longer and there is more upgrade parts available, as well as a whole slew of different mags that will work in it, including drum mags.

If you're going for a German loadout, get the STG-44

If you're going for an Eastern Europe/Com-Bloc loadout, get the RPK.

I have the Cyma/Echo-1/Red Star RPK and absolutely love it. I've obviously upgraded it, so it's no longer stock, but I have been exceptionally pleased with its construction.

I have an STG-44 and I've found it extremely satisfactory. However like a previous poster said, there aren't many upgrade parts built for it, so it depends on how much you want to upgrade it. But just stock, I would go STG-44 for hyper precision professional firepower superiority.
Edit: mine has lasted at present two years with fairly heavy use, so the STG-44 is built to last, in my experience

Personally, I would get the RPK first and the STG later (I too want to get both guns).
