I find simple hand signals are good when you and maybe one or two other people are trying to move covertly and you have neither coms nor short enough distance to lean over and whisper instructions or anything.

Depends on where; chances are your average kid at a cqb field won't know right from left. If you have people who understand them then yes they're pretty helpful.

 

Simple handsigns, yes. And to be totally honest, many people know or can figure them out; hold, move in, watch out, get down slowly/quietly, get down quickly.

There are really only a couple more you should know... Cover me, regroup, I hear ____, I see ____, # of enemies, and a few other simple things.

Beyond that, unless you're getting into some hardcore MilSim, you honestly don't need much else.
While I'm on the subject, if you're playing speed-airsoft, you likely won't use many of these signals.
But generally, for general field or anything above that in level, you want AT LEAST the basics.

My old team all just used straight sign language on the field. Lol when you talk all day in sign with your friends, it makes sense to do it on the field.

Lol they may be jokes but I'm going to be using that "this is what I think of your opinion" one, I love it.

 

These should be the official hand signals for airsoft, they fill every need on the field.
